Google to Allow Europeans Erase Personal Information from Search Engine Results
Posted on Friday, May 30th, 2014 at 2:07 PM
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google is starting to accept requests from Europeans who want to erase unflattering information from the results produced by the world’s dominant search engine. The demands can be submitted on a Web page that Google opened late Thursday in response to a landmark ruling issued two weeks ago by Europe’s highest court. The decision gives Europeans the means to polish their online reputations by petitioning Google and other search engines to remove potentially damaging links to newspaper articles and other websites with embarrassing information about their past activities.Google’s compliance thrusts the company into the prickly position of having to balance privacy concerns and “the right to be forgotten” against the principles of free expression and “the right to know.”It will also create a divide between how Google generates search results about some people in Europe and the rest of the world. For now at least, Google will only scrub personal information spanning a 32-nation swath in Europe. That means Googling the same person in the United States and dozens of other countries could look much different than it does from Europe.Although the court ruling only applied to 28 countries in the European Union, Google is extending the “right to be forgotten” to four other countries — Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. It’s unclear when the whitewashing will begin. So far, Google has only said it will happen soon. Former "Entertainment Tonight" correspondent Samantha Harris is battling breast cancer.TV Host Samantha Harris Diagnosed With Breast Cancer
The 40-year-old television personality got choked up as she revealed the heartbreaking news on "Good Morning America" on Wednesday.
Harris initially detected a lump during a self-examination last fall, but her mammogram results came back clean earlier in the year. However, she says something still didn't feel right, which lead her to consult a breast cancer specialist several months later. Following a needle biopsy and a lumpectomy, specialists diagnosed her with breast cancer.
"It's scary and you worry. ... My daughters are three and six, you know. All they're concerned about is to have mommy active, be able to hold them, hug them, kiss them," a tearful Harris said. "I want to still do and from what the doctors say, I will still be able to do, but no matter how positive of a diagnosis as I have, it doesn't keep the demons of fear from taking over your mind and your thought process."
Harris consulted several specialists who presented her with two treatment options: A double mastectomy or a less-radical second lumpectomy with radiation. She opted for the double mastectomy and will go under the knife later this month, according to People.
Harris married Michael Hess in 2005 and the pair has two daughters, Josselyn Sydney, 6, and Hillary Madison, 3.
Despite her prognosis, the former "Dancing With the Stars" host is staying positive. "I will be here to plan my daughter's weddings and they better like the dress I pick," she shared in an in-depth interview with "Entertainment Tonight," which will air on Wednesday evening. The brunette stunner, who leads an extremely active lifestyle and is a longtime runner, revealed in October that she got her first mammogram.
The American Cancer Society currently advocates for women to get mammogram screenings annually beginning at age 40.
Harris has already received an outpouring of support from her fans, who've been tweeting warm wishes for her.Kiss not the first to tell Rock Hall to kiss off
Graciousness is not always high on the list of attributes you find in successful rock 'n' roll stars.

Because of this, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions have sometimes brought out the worst in its inductees, whether continuing once-private feuds in public or launching criticism at the hall itself. This year it's Kiss that's angry, its members upset over the organization's decision only to induct original members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley while excluding members who joined later.
As a result, the makeup-wearing rockers won't be wearing makeup or rocking at Thursday's ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn when they're inducted with Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, Linda Ronstadt, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens, The E Street Band, late Beatles manager Brian Epstein and former Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham, who also is boycotting this year's show over dissatisfaction with his role.
Here's a quick look at seven other acts who chose to make the ceremony uncomfortable for everyone else or just skipped it altogether:
— The guys in Guns N' Roses are at a point now where they can sometimes play nice together, but that was not the case when the Los Angeles rockers were inducted in 2012. Frontman Axl Rose decided to skip the ceremony because it didn't "appear to be somewhere I'm actually wanted or respected." Guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steve Adler, however, did take the stage, performing together for the first time in nearly two decades. Myles Kennedy served as the stand-in for Rose.
— There was nary a Van Halen during the towering rock band's induction. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen chose to enter rehab the week before the 2007 ceremony — a pretty rock-solid excuse. But his drummer brother Alex also chose not to attend. And original lead singer David Lee Roth pulled a very Roth-like maneuver and pulled out at the last minute in a huff over what song he'd perform at the event. That left bassist Michael Anthony and second singer Sammy Hagar as the only official attendees. They were reduced to performing with Paul Shaffer's house band.
— John Fogerty also faced the prospects of a put-together band when he refused to play with surviving Creedence Clearwater Revival members, bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford. He rallied with a couple of all-stars — Bruce Springsteen and The Band's Robbie Robertson — to back him onstage, but the rift became oh-so-public when Cook and Clifford left the room while Fogerty played. The band split in 1972 and Fogerty was still holding grudges at the 1993 induction, telling Cook and Clifford he wouldn't play with them ever again when they showed up for rehearsal earlier in the day. Cook and Clifford returned when the lights came back up, with a forlorn Cook holding the bass he'd hoped to play.
— The Sex Pistols were among the first and most notorious punk rock bands and fittingly extended a metaphorical middle finger to the hall when finally inducted in 2006 — five years after it was first eligible. The British band, which featured lead singer Johnny Rotten and late bassist Sid Vicious, said in a hand-written and ungrammatical note posted on its website that the hall was like "urine in wine" selling "old famous": "Were not coming. Were not your monkeys and so what?" Rolling Stone magazine founder Jann Wenner read the letter in its entirety, and invited the band to pick up their trophies anyway: "If they want to smash them into bits, they can do that, too."
— The middle finger was not metaphorical at all when Elvis Costello briefly appeared on stage as his backing band The Attractions during the same 2007 ceremony. The British singer had been touring with two members of the band, but was in a long-running feud with bassist Bruce Thomas that spilled over onstage. Thomas took his trophy from a presenter, said, "Thanks for the memories, that's it," and then walked off the stage and out the door. Costello marked his exit with his middle finger.
— Members of Blondie added even more bad blood to the 2007 ceremony as a division between founding members Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, and Frank Infante and Nigel Harrison spilled onto the stage. Harry and Stein had begun performing together in 1999 without the band's other three members and Infante and Harrison sued unsuccessfully to rejoin the band. Infante continued to lobby Harry onstage at the ceremony: "Debbie, are we allowed?" She declined and the band went on to play its three biggest hits with stand-ins. "They wrote themselves out of the band history, as far as I'm concerned," Stein said backstage. "They should have a little bit of honor. This is supposed to be rock 'n' roll. This is supposed to be friendly. This is like going through the trenches together."
— Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr recently reunited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' first trip to the U.S. But things weren't always so copacetic, as McCartney showed when he failed to show up to the group's induction in 1988. He explained the decision through a publicist: "After 20 years, the Beatles still have some business differences. I would feel like a complete hypocrite waving and smiling with them at a fake reunion."

For 13 years running, Americans have been drinking less Coke. Now Diet Coke sales are falling off a cliff. Globally, sales growth of soda is slowing amid concerns about sugar intake and obesity.

The trends are industrywide, but it is especially bad news for Coca-Cola Co., a company that derives almost 75% of its global sales volume from carbonated soft drinks.
"Sugar water with bubbles is not the future of the world. There's an existential issue,'' said Tom Pirko, an industry consultant at Bevmark LLC.
A growing number of industry analysts suggest Coca-Cola should spend less to advertise cola and more to diversify aggressively through acquisitions of companies, like energy-drink maker Monster Beverage Corp. Sales of Coke's nonsodas, including Minute Maid juice, Dasani water and Powerade sports drinks, rose 5% last year by volume.
But that isn't what Coke says it has in store. Instead, the Atlanta-based company plans to double down on its namesake brand. The company is boosting advertising, introducing new products, and using singer Taylor Swift as a pitchwoman. Chief Executive Muhtar Kent has said that last year, when Coke's U.S. soda volume dropped 2%, was an anomaly. Soda can return to healthy growth, even in the U.S., especially if it is a brand name like Coke, he said.
"Coca-Cola remains magical. We need to work even harder to enhance the romance of the brand in every corner of the world,'' Mr. Kent told investors in February. He regularly refers to flagship Coke as the company's "oxygen'' and "lifeblood.''
For starters, he plans to increase global advertising by $1 billion over the next three years. The company spent $3.3 billion last year. Much of the increase will be devoted to soda, including the Sprite and Fanta brands. Coke says its sponsorship of this year's World Cup soccer tournament in Brazil will be the company's largest marketing campaign ever.
Coke is defending aspartame, the main artificial sweetener in diet soda, citing more than 200 studies affirming its safety. At the same time, it plans to roll out Coca-Cola Life, a moderate-calorie version sweetened with stevia plant extract, across more countries, after releasing the drink in Argentina and Chile last year.
Zuma Press Coke is known for its global distribution network. Shown, the World of Coca-Cola permanent exhibition near company headquarters in Atlanta. Coke in February struck a deal to sell soda through Keurig Green Mountain Inc.'s countertop machines, inching closer to a former executive's dream that Coke one day would stream from kitchen taps.
The company defends its course, noting that its global beverage volume rose 2% last year and revenue increased 3%, in currency-neutral terms, despite tough economic conditions. Coke says it has continued to win market share in the U.S. and globally from PepsiCo Inc. and other rivals in soda and noncarbonated beverages. Past investments in its core brands, including Coke, consistently have paid off, it says.
Coke said Mr. Kent wasn't available for comment, citing the quiet period ahead of its earning report on April 15. Foreign-exchange losses from a strengthening dollar are expected to place a significant drag on profit this year.
Skepticism is growing—even inside the company—about whether Coke can still meet its target for 3% to 4% annual volume growth in a world in which soda volume rose only 0.9% last year, according to Euromonitor.
At a global planning meeting late last year, Steve Cahillane, who then was president of Coca-Cola Americas, said growth targets were unrealistic, according to people familiar with the matter. He had been viewed as a potential successor to Mr. Kent. A few weeks later, Mr. Cahillane left the company in an organizational shake-up.
John Faucher, a beverage analyst at J.P. Morgan, said Coke should diversify more aggressively through acquisitions. Coke already is the world's biggest juice company but could bulk up in areas like tea, coffee and dairy, where it is a much smaller player. "Interest rates are low and they have a ton of cash,'' Mr. Faucher said.
Coke's cash and short-term investments totaled $17.12 billion at the end of December, up from $13.46 billion a year earlier.
Industry trackers say potential U.S. candidates could include Arizona Beverage Co., with an estimated market share of 25% in ready-to drink teas, and Monster, the country's biggest energy drink maker by volume. But Arizona's owners are locked in a protracted court dispute, and Monster's marketing and ingredients are being scrutinized by regulators, complicating any deals.
Bloomberg News Coca-Cola plans to increase global advertising by $1 billion over the next three years. Above, a Coke bottling plant in Myanmar last year. Mr. Kent has said that Coke is always looking at acquisitions, but the company declines to comment on any possible targets.
Coke still has plenty of supporters, including Berkshire Hathaway Inc., long the beverage maker's largest shareholder. "I'm 100% in accord with Coca-Cola's business strategy and regard Muhtar Kent as the ideal CEO for Coca-Cola,'' Berkshire Chairman Warren Buffett said by email.
Coke already has 11 nonsoda brands with more than $1 billion each in retail sales and an unrivaled distribution network, and operates in every country except Cuba and North Korea. In Eurasia and Africa, Coke's beverage volume rose 7% last year.
"This is more of an emerging-markets and developing-markets story; that's the way we look at it," said Kurt Havnaer, a portfolio manager at Jensen Quality Growth Fund. The U.S. mutual fund owns about $150 million in Coke shares.
Still, investors have cooled on Coke. The company's share price has fallen 2.7% over the past year, while the S&P 500 has climbed 21%. Last week, Budweiser maker Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, the world's largest brewer, supplanted Coke as the biggest beverage company by stock-market capitalization.
The pace of Coke's global soda volume growth slowed to 1% last year from 3% in 2012 as concerns about health and obesity spread. Last month the World Health Organization suggested that individuals limit consumption of added sugars in food and drinks to 6 teaspoons a day—less than the 9 teaspoons in a 12-ounce can of Coke.
Soda volume in Mexico, Coke's second-largest market, have fallen an estimated 5% or more since the country introduced a tax on sugary beverages in January.
The new drag on Coke's U.S. business is diet soda. Diet Coke volume has been down for eight straight years, accelerating the decline in the past three. Diet Coke sales plunged 6.8%, in volume terms last year, according to Beverage Digest. Diet Pepsi sales fell 6.9%, but PepsiCo, with its enormous snacks and foods business, is far less dependent on soda than Coke is.
(Newser) - Perhaps the most incredible result to come from a parent monitoring her child's Facebook page: A Salt Lake mom who did just that managed to help intercept two teens who allegedly planned to shoot her son. The mom called the police officer who serves as resource officer at West High School Friday and said that she saw comments from two male teenagers on Facebook threatening to come to the school and shoot her son. "She had actually read threats and seen the threat on his Facebook page," a police detective tells the Deseret News.Mom Spies on Son's Facebook, Saves Him from Shooting
The detective says there was also a picture of a gun posted to Instagram, and the hand holding it had gang-affiliated letters written on it. Police officers searched the school and the surrounding area around 2pm, and found the teens who allegedly made the threats in a car parked nearby-along with, allegedly, the pictured gun, ammo, drugs, and lots of money. Police believe the boys, ages 16 and 17, were waiting there in order to confront their intended target after school, NBC News reports. They were booked on various charges; the incident is suspected to be gang-related.

Sean wishes Naya nothing but the best and it is still his hope that they can continue to work through their issues privately. We will not be commenting again on this matter."
The news of their broken engagement follows a Star magazine report which claimed the rapper had cheated on Rivera, leading her to call off the engagement. Debunking these claims, an insider tells Us, "Sean did not cheat on Naya and the allegations are 100% false and untrue."

The source adds that the "Beware" rapper was the one who called off the wedding.
Glee star Rivera, 27, and Big Sean, 26, got engaged last October, just six months after going public with their romance. Although the couple did not reveal a wedding date, Rivera was spotted shopping for a bridal gown immediately after news of her engagement broke.

The Fox star told Cosmopolitan for Latinas recently in its Spring 2014 issue that she believed Sean was going to be "an amazing husband," and someday, "a great father."
"He's so kind to people, but he also wears the pants in our relationship, which I love," she said. "We Latinas are very independent and strong, so it's even sweeter that I've found somebody who can let me out of that role for a minute."

In one instance, the lawsuit alleges, Duane Reade posted a tweet of the photo with the message, “Love a quick #DuaneReade run? Even @KateHeigl can't resist shopping #NYC's favorite drugstore.”
A spokesman for Duane Reade has not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment.

OMG: Do Kim and Kanye Have to Call Off Their Wedding?

Courtesy of Getty Images
Is the Kimye wedding extravaganza over before it even starts?! Rumor has it French residency law may squash our dreams of seeing Kim Kardashian and Kanye West tie the knot in Paris reports Radar Online. See more: The Most Flattering Wedding Dress for Your Body Type
According to various statutes in France, at least one of the parties has to have resided in France for at least 40 days prior to the wedding. The gossip website spoke to the French Embassy in Washington D.C. to get the scoop: "All marriages must be performed by a French civil authority before any religious ceremony takes place. The mayor can authorize the deputy mayor or a city councilor to perform the ceremony in the town in which one of the parties to be married has resided for at least 40 days preceding the marriage. These requirements can not be waived."
See more: Kim Kardashian's Wedding Dress! 11 Fantasy Sketches
The rumored May 24 wedding date is fast approaching, leaving barely enough time to fulfill the residency requirements. And yet, a Kardashian source totally dismissed the reports to E! News, calling them "completely false."
Well, that almost settles that: If Kimye plans on obtaining a marriage license overseas they will have to take the French law into account. But that shouldn't be an issue since Kanye owns an apartment in Paris.
Though there is an upside to the French law. It dictates that there needs to be two wedding ceremonies, which we're sure the flashy couple would love to plan. "The religious ceremony has to be performed after the civil ceremony (never before). The minister, priest or rabbi will require a certificate of civil marriage before any religious ceremony takes place," the French Embassy told Radar Online.
We can't wait to see how this "intimate" wedding with over-the-top favors and a double ceremony finally unfolds!
