The Best Podcast of the Summer is '2 Dope Queens'
By far, my favorite new find has been 2 Dope Queens, the comedy and culture podcast from Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson. They've just wrapped the twelfth episode of their first, almost-flawless season. The show is produced by WNYC and is centered on the duo's live, unscripted show in Brooklyn.
It's hard to map the way Jessica and Phoebe delightfully play off of each other. In the episode #5 opener, Jessica described hiring two older white-lady professional organizers to fold her underwear ("That's reparations right there...thank you Sojourner!") — and ended up asking Phoebe if she would make out with Bono. The answer was "fuck yeah." They seamlessly moved from Point A to Point Z by making over a dozen anecdotal, comedic stops along the way, including a fabulous Oprah impersonation by Jessica.
I like the exposure to other performers I wouldn't otherwise know about, but it's the relationship between Jessica and Phoebe that hooks. Beneath the comedy is a sensibility founded in the utter confusion and survival-based intelligence that results from trying to thrive as young women of color in contemporary America. The first dozen episodes are available for streaming, and are still hot-take fresh. I'm looking forward to Season 2.
