Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan and USAID Administrator Mark Green met today with representatives from international and non-governmental organizations on the situation in Yemen. The participants discussed progress on the political front since their last meeting. The Deputy Secretary reiterated the United States’ calls for the Republic of Yemen government and the Houthis to swiftly implement agreements made in Sweden and continue working with UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths on advancing the political process. The participants agreed that all parties must take steps to implement the Sweden agreements and noted the importance of the UN regaining access to the Red Sea Mills. The participants discussed the latest efforts to alleviate the dire humanitarian situation, including the February 26 UN High-Level Pledging Conference, at which the United States announced nearly $24 million in funding for the response, bringing total U.S. humanitarian assistance to nearly $721 million since FY 2018. The representatives reiterated their calls for all parties to improve humanitarian and commercial access to Hudaydah and Aden ports, the re-opening of Sana’a airport to commercial flights, and the removal of bureaucratic hurdles imposed on humanitarian workers. Participants discussed the importance of continued support from the United States and other UN Security Council members in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. The Deputy Secretary and the Administrator thanked the representatives for continuing to engage regularly to help provide important information on conditions on the ground.
